In most of the 1800's gifts were wrapped in simple tissue paper or sturdy brown paper. Other times gifts were presented in decorated cornucopias or paper baskets.
The Hall Brothers of Hallmark fame discovered gift wrap market accidentally in 1917 when they ran out of the usual red, green and white tissue paper days before Christmas. They began to sell decorative envelope liners temporarily, It was such a hit that they began making their own decorative wrapping paper. Soon their gift wrap sales rivaled their greeting card sales. |
